Xanthelasma Caught your eye? Erase it with Ease

Xanthelasma are soft, yellowish patches or slightly raised deposits that form just under the skin, most commonly clustering symmetrically around the upper or lower eyelids. While they are completely benign and harmless, they are highly visible and a very common source of self-consciousness.

These patches are caused by a localised build-up of cholesterol or fatty deposits beneath the skin's surface. Interestingly, you do not need to have high cholesterol to develop them; many clients with perfectly normal levels notice them appearing. However, because they are permanent and will never go away on their own, removing them is a highly transformative way to restore your confidence when looking in the mirror.

How Is Xanthelasma Removed?

Treating delicate areas near the eyes requires absolute precision, control, and specialised care. At our Dublin clinic, I safely remove Xanthelasma using Advanced Electrolysis—a non-invasive method that requires no lasers, harsh chemicals, freezing agents, or injections.

Using a specialised, ultra-fine probe, a highly controlled heat current is applied directly into the cholesterol deposit. This thermal energy methodically breaks down the fatty tissue layer by layer. The process is incredibly precise, ensuring the surrounding healthy skin remains completely protected. Most clients are pleasantly surprised by how straightforward, comfortable, and manageable the entire procedure feels.

How Much Does Xanthelasma Removal Cost?

Because xanthelasma almost always appear symmetrically—mirroring each other on both eyelids—treatment pricing is structured by the session rather than per individual patch. This allows us to safely target and treat multiple deposits in a single, comfortable appointment. While smaller patches disappear after one session, larger or thicker deposits may benefit from a secondary follow-up appointment to achieve a completely flat finish.

What Results Can You Expect?

Xanthelasma removal delivers exceptional, visible flattening, though the healing process moves in distinct stages as your skin completely resets:

Immediate Post-Treatment: The yellow deposit shrinks significantly right away. You will experience localized redness and minor swelling around the eyelid, which settles down quickly.

Days 3–7: A small, flat protective crust or scab will naturally form over the treated site. This is a mandatory part of the healing process and must be allowed to drop off naturally.

Weeks 2–4: As the skin heals and the body naturally clears away the treated tissue, the area becomes beautifully flat and smooth.

Note: While the bulgy, raised texture is successfully flattened out for good, the skin over the treated area can occasionally remain slightly lighter in colour than the surrounding tissue. We will discuss this transparently during your consultation.

Preparing for your Appointment & Aftercare

Pre-Treatment Pep

  • Arrive Fresh-Faced: Ensure your eyes and eyelids are completely free of mascara, eyeliner, heavy eye creams, concealer, or fake tan.

  • Remove Contact Lenses: Please wear your glasses to the clinic or bring your lens case, as contact lenses must be removed prior to treating the eyelid area.

  • Consult Your GP: While Xanthelasma are entirely benign, we always recommend mentioning them to your GP beforehand just to rule out any underlying lipid or health factors.

Post-Treatment Aftercare

  • Keep It Clean & Dry: Keep the eye area completely clean and dry for the first 48 hours to let the skin establish its natural healing crust.

  • Strictly No Makeup: Do not apply under-eye concealer, foundation, or eye shadow directly over the treated spots while the micro-crusts are healing.

  • Sun Protection: Protect the healing skin from direct sunlight and avoid UV exposure until the area is completely settled and healed.

Will My Xanthelasma Return After Treatment?

Once an individual cholesterol deposit has been precisely targeted, broken down, and flattened using advanced diathermy, that specific tissue is gone.

However, because Xanthelasma is caused by internal, systemic factors or genetic predispositions, treatment cannot stop your body’s natural chemistry from potentially forming new deposits in the surrounding eyelid area as time goes on. To manage this seamlessly, many of our clients simply pop into the clinic for a quick maintenance touch-up if they ever notice a new patch beginning to form, keeping the skin around their eyes consistently smooth, flat, and clear.
